An American student majoring in anthropology named Bernard Gallin and his newly-wed wife came to Sinsing Village, Puyan Township for studies in 1956, fell in love with this simple farm village, quickly immersed themselves into local life and finished a field investigation report. The local seniors are very fond of talking about this period of history. The Little Dragon Village, which made an impression upon Bernard Gallin’s mind for many years, still has many traditional Taiwanese old family compounds. Bernard Gallin’s visiting Sinsing Village again in 1999 awakened local residents’ community awareness, who wanted to pass down this moving story and keeping the good tradition intact by building a Little Dragon Village Cultural Center. The site and the building for Little Dragon Village Cultural Center, which is a traditional sanhoyuan kept intact, belong to the clan of the incumbent Village Chief- Huang Jia-he. They donate the land and the building to promote the local culture. A ceremonial arch made of bamboo with the characters “Little Dragon Village Cultural Center” is erected in front of the cultural center. The application for building Little Dragon Village Cultural Center is being evaluated by Cultural Affairs Council. Though it is not formally approved yet, the act has in fact made the residents in the village reach a consensus of preserving the old family compounds so that future generations can appreciate the beauty of tradition.
